Soil of the Velebit Nature Park
The main types of soil within the Park are: black soil on limestone, rendzina on dolomite, calcicambisol, luvisol and brown podzolic soil. Velebit is located in the area with the largest soil erosion in Europe. The upper soil layer is shallow, it lies on limestone and dolomite so the mountain torrents wash it away rather quickly when there is no forest cover. The problem of soil erosion is especially present in the coastal area of the Nature Park.
